Artist Residency Roundtable

Join us September 26th from 9:30-12:00 for our Artist Residency Roundtable, meet some of our teaching artists and learn all about the residency programs available to schools in our area. Residencies are available in the visual arts, dance, music, drama, poetry, circus arts and yoga – and all residencies link to core curriculum content standards. Unlike an assembly or workshop, residencies take place over a two – six week period and allow students to participate in a much deeper artistic experience. Learning about different cultures through a dance residency, creating a school mural depicting New Jersey’s history, bringing to life a play by Shakespeare, are just a few examples of  recent residencies.

At Jefferson School in Maplewood, 4th grade students mixed American Idol with Greek Mythology, researching and creating Medusa, Cyclops and Cerebus and culminating with a presentation called “Creature Idol” in which the creatures competed before a Greek tribunal. Here’s a brief video with some of the highlights.

At Central School in East Hanover, 5th graders created a mural depicting key elements of their character education program with mural artist Caren Frost Olmsted. See highlights from that residency in this video. They enjoyed the project so much they are planning a new mural for the 2011- 2012 school year.
