Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was America’s leading political cartoonist in the second half of the
nineteenth century.  From the studio in his Morristown , NJ  home, Nast popularized the
symbols of theDemocratic (donkey) and Republican (elephant) parties that continue more
than a century later.  Nash, a staunch Republican, illustrated his views of the presidential
campaigns for Harper’s Weekly.  He supported the candidate he felt would best serve the
country.
