A world-renowned expert on energy systems and the science-policy intersection (PhD in theoretical high energy physics, Harvard), Dr. Socolow taught at Yale and then at Princeton (Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering) for 42 years. His current research focuses on issues relating to climate change and energy, specifically on global carbon management, carbon dioxide capture (and storage) from fossil fuels, global energy, energy efficiency and the like. As Co-Director of the Carbon Mitigation Initiative, a twenty year-long research project coordinating research in environmental science, energy technology, geological engineering and public policy, Dr. Socolow teaches at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School, serves on the Princeton Environmental Institute’s Executive Committee and on impressive array of both national and international professional and governmental panels, laboratories and research teams on climate and energy. Among the dizzying number of prestigious awards, Socolow was honored for his “outstanding research in global carbon management and the hydrogen economy” by the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences of Sweden and “For leadership in establishing energy and environmental problems as legitimate research fields for physicists, and for demonstrating that these broadly defined problems can be addressed with the highest scientific standards,” by the American Physical Society (APS). A Fellow of numerous professional science organizations, he was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.
