The Arts Council of the Morris Area is pleased to offer a central location for housing artist information and work samples. We have a resource database of several hundred area artists, and each registry member file contains information you believe important (resumé, press releases, promotional materials, slides, prints, CDs, DVDs or tapes, etc). Information contained in each file is available for viewing, at no cost, to members of the community in search of an artist. Artists are responsible for the accuracy and currency of their files. Please do not include original work. Working in collaboration with other organizations, the Arts Council of the Morris Area strives to expand exhibition, performance and employment opportunities for individual artist members and, through workshops and seminars, offer skills and expertise – artistic and business, as well as networking opportunities. Registry members are eligible to be highlighted on the web site and can include exhibition and show information in the quarterly newsletter and calendar. Additional information on activities - workshops, seminars, competitions, requests for proposals, etc - are passed along as well. |

LUIS NISHIZAWA: Mexico Born February 2, 1918 in San Mateo Ixtacalco, Mexico. His father, Kenji Nishizawa is Japanese with origins from Nagano prefecture and his mother, María de Jesús Flores is Mexican. Nishizawa's artistic studies began when he was admitted to the Academy of San Carlos in 1942 and since 1951, the date of his first exhibition in the Hall of Mexican Plastic Art, he has been a tireless producer and exponent of Mexican art. His traditional approach and his reduction and simplification of forms ally him with such great landscape painters as Dr Atl, Gerardo Murillo. He also gave classes at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1955. Nishizawa is recognized as one of Mexico's leading landscape artists of the 20th century. He currently works and teaches in Toluca, in a late eighteenth-century house that he has converted to a studio and museum.
FERMIN MARTINEZ: Dominican Republic Fermin is an accomplished and established artist who has been creating art since he was a teen in his native Dominican Republic. He began exhibiting his work in the Plainfield/ Watchung area and won awards in local art competitions soon after settling in New Jersey in 1989. Most of his works are samples of impressionism, which include landscapes, still life, countryside details, seascapes and other forms of expression of common daily life. His paintings have been widely exhibited in the Caribbean, Italy, South America, and the North East United States. Private collectors are also seeking after Fermin’s work. Fermin Martinez has participated in more than 60 group and individual expositions and has accumulated numerous awards. He was a featured artist in the February 1996 show “Mahogany” that aired on New York channel 25 (cable); in addition to cable, network TV and newspapers in the Dominican Republic. Fermin has an art school which is open to new students of all levels, he’s been teaching art for over 28 years and has presented workshops on the arts for local community groups and is presently the Chairperson of “RAICES,’ a Hispanic Cultural group in the state of New Jersey.
MANNY PEREZ: Cuba In my work as a mathematician, I deal constantly with symbols that correspond to objects in reality. In this context, the most fundamental is the digit one which has become an obsession of mine, a monomania of sorts. In a previous series, I explored the various aspects of oneness as a concept. In this one, I focus on one aspect: its abstract representation of the individual. I use the symbol as a device to express various aspects of the human condition. The works use a lifeless gray and a rational, Cartesian, form, yet attempt to portray the passions, joys and torments of being human, of living.
MIGUEL UROSA: Venezuela I enjoy finding in my pictures everyday simple things, portraits, bodies, lines in a building. I look at the light, the colors and try to establish rhythms and create drama and depth in my images by the use of multiple layers and media interventions to the original photograph. Some exhibition: Watchung Arts Center NJ. “Flowers, Dreams and Memories”. Solo show, Taller Puertoriqueno Philadelphia, P.A. Solo Show, Children Hospital, NJ. Solo Show, Edge Gallery, Rahway, NJ. Back to our Roots, Unique Vision, Watchung Art center, NJ. Collective, Museo de Petare, Caracas Venezuela, Barro Ludico Guest Artist. Charles Newman
L-R: Two oils : Kitchen Interior and On the Roof by Charles Newman Statement of Purpose My art is a way of visualizing concepts and feelings in nature. I am continually working on making my techniques more painterly than descriptive. By doing this, I use more paint and make shapes to identify objects with simple brush strokes. I find it possible to move, blend, and take away paint from the canvas enabling me to utilize these techniques to stretch them to more challenging levels. My real goal as an artist is to have my paintings become aesthetically beautiful and to create art so expressive that the viewer empathizes with my feelings. I realize this to be the ultimate achievement for an artist.
About the Artist
Charles
Newman is a realistic artist who has always been keenly aware if different
mediums of artistic expression. His fascination with natural scenes depicting
the beauty of nature as well as the many faces of people he has met provides the
sensitivity for Charles to express his concepts and feelings in his work. He
graduated from Rowan University earning his BFA in Studio Art having studied
under Daniel Chard and continued his studies at the Scuola Lorenzo d'Medici in
Florence where he studied with teachers and students from all over the world.
His travels exposed him to many influences all of which enabled him to broaden
his horizons and his interpretation of his use of colors, tones, and subjects.
He presently is studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in
Philadelphia. His work has been accepted into juried exhibitions and featured in
a number of solo exhibitions in adition to having been included into the
Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation collection. George M. Aronson
L-R: Skylands Manor Cherry Tree, photograph; The Palisades, Top of Cliffs at Dawn, by George M. Aronson

vast and irreplaceable treasures of drinking water supplies, forests, mountains,
and critical wildlife habitat. His photography has been featured prominently by the NJ Audubon Society, (National) Audubon Society, NJ Conservation Foundation, Pinelands Preservation Alliance, Sierra Club, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Regional Plan Association, Morris County Park Commission, Land Conservancy of NJ, Sterling Forest Partnership, Scenic Hudson, NY-NJ Trail Conference, American Planning Assocation, the Trust for Public Land, Eastman Kodak, the Star-Ledger and Morristown Daily Record newspapers. and others. His work may be known most generally to the public for his images appearing in "Town Planner" calendars distributed to over a quarter-million homes and businesses in the state. Major philanthropic institutions have used his photographs to enhance their annual reports. These include the William Penn, the Victoria, and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundations. His work has been exhibited widely in a great variety of venues. He has also received a number of prestigious awards incuding the NJ Audubon Society’s "Conservationist of the Year" in 1992, the Hackensack Riverkeeper’s “Excellence in Media/Arts” award in 2004, and presenter of the Lehman Lecture at the Morristown-Beard School in 2006.
