Although the coronavirus likely prevents us from presenting Music Beyond Borders this summer, we thought you might enjoy revisiting some of the wonderful moments from past performances.
For 10 years, Music Beyond Borders, a collaboration between Morris Arts and Mayo Performing Arts Center has offered this summer series of free outdoor programs of world music and dance….bringing a taste of cultures from six continents to summer lunchtimes on the Morristown Green.
So, let’s take a trip down memory lane and sample some of the past delights of Music Beyond Borders:
Part of our 2018 Music Beyond Borders season featured a taste of Bali….with the BALAM Dance Theatre, on July 10, 2018:

This video depicts BALAM’s version of The Abduction of Sita, the central component of the great Hindu epic known as The Ramayana (Rama’s Journey). Balinese dance features highly stylized movement/gestures, vocalizations and is performed to the fascinating sounds of the gamelan (gong orchestras) of Indonesia.

July 10, 2018: BALAM Dance Theatre: Balinese dance
The NYC based BALAM Dance Theatre brought the elegant and exotic dances (and costumes) from Indonesia’s island of Bali to Morristown on July 10, 2018. An electrifying dance troupe critically acclaimed in the NY Times and Village Voice and featured in performances at Lincoln Center, DUMBO Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow and multiple First Nights, BALAM presented its unique rendition of the Ramayana: Abduction of Sita, the legendary Asian/Indonesian epic depicting the battle between good vs. evil portrayed through archetypal characters. It embodies a call for unity and peace and a message of inclusion and forgiveness. Spoiler alert: Good triumphs and restores the balance of order between cosmic forces of creation and destruction.
