Juneteenth Arts Celebration 2025 kicked off with Mayo Performing Art Center’s outdoor concert featuring Lynette Sheard and the Lawrence Allen Trio. Lynette’s performances have been acknowledged in numerous publications including, The New York Times, Broadway World, and The Star-Ledger, which proclaimed that “Her voice reaches deep into one’s soul and finds a soft spot”. Her interactive performance showcased popular freedom songs that demonstrate the joy and hope of the African-American experience.
The following day was the public reception for Art in the Atrium’s signature exhibition, Another Slice of Sweet Potato Pie. Curated by Onnie Strother, this show featured artist Russell Murray and highlighted the work of more than 75 Black and Afro-Latino artists.
The 3-day celebration culminated with an evening at the Morris Museum which featured a performance by the Unity Steppers as well as a screening of a short film highlighting artist Danielle Scott. Curator-led tours were available throughout the evening and the Spark!Lab had extended hours. Music and refreshments from Dominique’s Dishes capped off the celebration.
